Happy New Year: Devil’s Party, O/C, 24 X 38”, 2017-2018

 

          It was the last day of 2017.  I was planning my New Year’s Eve dinner for my family.  Unlike other New Year’s (where I was expecting a good new year to come, and making a new year’s plan accordingly), the start of 2018 seemed ominous. This New Year’s eve,  I have a heavy feeling, a dire foreshadowing of what I perceive to be not such a good year on the horizon.  So I begin this painting, like a New Year’s greeting card, in an attempt to capture the moment.  I envision a Devil’s party, attended only by these three men:  Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.  It seems to me that these three men are totally in control.  What will they bring to bear in the world in 2018?  And do we have anything to say here?  Do we have anything to contribute?  Do we have any choices here?
