INSIGHT:  Drawings and Watercolors

Insight implies many things.   It is a process of deep thought whereby we seem to know, and to know instantly.  It creates within us a second sense driven by instinct.  And instinct requires some form of action. Insight also, of course, makes us think of the eyes and what the eyes do, the process of seeing and perceiving.   Through perception, we recognize, we become aware, we grasp the world around us.  All of this implies a feeling of clairvoyance.  A knowing beyond knowing. For me, it is a seeing beyond seeing.  Art is also a knowing beyond knowing, a seeing beyond seeing. When I am confronted with a model, when my eyes perceive their eyes, I see deeply and we begin to share.   My perception mingles with my thoughts, the model with theirs. We are sharing the same space, literally and metaphorically.  The process of drawing begins then, with this deep almost clairvoyant seeing, and continues with a personal introspective reading and very personal feelings about the human psyche. As I draw her or him, I feel I am revealing the model's special and rare characteristics, a self that becomes indicators of identity, collective and shared cultures, individual personality, world community and collective problems of living this human existence we all live.  That is the journey of insight that I take each time I draw.

All drawings are graphite and watercolor on archival paper.  All are drawn from live models.
